CMR Convention

What is the CMR convention?

The Convention on the Contract for the International Carriage of Goods by Road (CMR) is applied only to road cargo shipments for a remuneration between two different countries. The Convention defines that at least one of the countries indicated in the contract must be the country of the Contractual party, regardless of the residence and nationality of the Contractual party.

The terms of the CMR Convention are definitive, even if the contract states otherwise.

CMR Convention contractual relationships exist between:

  • The cargo sender,
  • The carrier,
  • The cargo consignee.

When offering international shipments to and from various European and other countries in the field of logistics, in addition to the contract terms the Convention on the Contract for the International Carriage of Goods by Road must also apply. The Convention protects the cargo sender and defines liability of the cargo carrier for delays or loss or damage of the shipped cargo.
